Why two dates?

For India, the Sun enters Makara (Capricorn, sidereal) on Thu 14 Jan 2027 at 21:10 India time (IST), after sunset, so it's kept the next day, Fri 15 Jan, when the punya kaal falls in daylight.

What it is

Marks the Sun's entry into the sidereal sign of Makara and the beginning of its northward course. Because it follows the solar rather than the lunar reckoning, its civil date moves very little from year to year — but it does depend on the ayanamsa in use.

Also known as Uttarayan, Maghi, Makar Sankranti, Uttarayana, Khichdi, Poush Sankranti, Til Sankranti, Sankranthi Habba, Sankranti, Sankranthi, Sankramana, Makara Sankramana.
