What it is
The first day of Great Lent in the Byzantine rite, forty-eight days before Pascha and therefore always a Monday. It is the Orthodox counterpart to Ash Wednesday, not a translation of it - the two fall on different days of the week and open seasons of different length. Pascha minus 48 days; the first day of Great Lent. Orthodox reckoning, shown as its Gregorian civil date.
Also known as Ash Monday, Pure Monday, Kathara Deftera.
